2024 CISWA 31st Annual Conference

The CISWA 31st Annual Conference took place on November 1, 2024, at Murdoch University, focusing on creating a “Sense of Belonging” for international students in Western Australia. Keynote speakers included Hon. David Templeman, Minister for International Education, and Nilesh Makwana, emphasizing the $2.94 billion contribution of international students to WA’s economy and the need for an inclusive environment.

The conference featured insights from Phil Honeywood and Derryn Belford on the Australian and WA education sectors.

StudyPerth showcased their initiatives, including a Perth Airport welcome desk, orientation support, cost-of-living assistance, cultural events, and career resources like job fairs and coaching to help students connect with the WA business community.

Researcher Dr. Siddier Chambers explored the significance of fostering a sense of belonging, outlining barriers like cultural shock and enablers such as supportive peer and faculty relationships.

Representing the Public Secondary School sector, Fremantle College and Como Secondary College shared their unique programs that promote cultural exchange and community ties, guiding students in their transitions to higher education.

A Student Support Panel discussed the four pillars of belonging: peer-led learning, institutional pride, community engagement, and academic support, urging institutions to center student needs.

The student panel “Belonging Beyond Borders” highlighted international students’ experiences, bridging cultural divides and fostering authentic connections on campus. This was hosted by the lively and knowledgeable Dr Linda Yang and was a conference highlight!

The day concluded with positive feedback, praising the engaging, relevant, and impactful content.

After our conference, we celebrated CISWA’s 60th Anniversary! This is a major milestone for our organisation and all those who have supported CISWA over the years and we enjoyed viewing some historical documents, hearing some stories presented by Simon Davies-Burrows and tasting some of the wonderful canapes and drinks provided.
